How? you ask . . once again Best Buds has the honor of partnering with The American Cancer Society Tamaqua & Surrounding Communities Relay For Life Campaign as we celebrate Valentine's Day featuring 300 Stems of Golden Flowers 'Magic Series Roses which we are offering for $5.00 plus tax for a single stem and $50.00 plus tax for a dozen! All roses MUST BE PRE-ORDERED. They are cash, carry & Pick-UP. The Event takes place on Friday, February 10, 2012 at my Garden Studio located at 2343 Neffs Laurys Road -- which we all know really isn't in Slatington but actually North Whitehall Township and the pick up time is from 3 PM until 7 PM. Arrangements can be made for other pick up hours by appointment if this time frame does not meet with your schedule. There will be an extra 'sweet' surprise that accompanies all orders!

More 2012 Wedding Trends

Today I have been doing more homework for the upcoming 2012 Wedding Season Trends
. . .and truth be known the 2013 Trends are already being compiled!

Weddings are no different than the technology we use everyday with our computers, phones, tablets, etc. -- it is changing daily! So whether you want to be a trendsetter or timeless bride . . . there is a look and style for you.

This time of year is known for Bridal & Wedding Expos because during the holiday season 'The Love Bug' has been very busy bringing couples together who have decided to take the journey of a lifetime and now are ready to plan their Wedding. During consultations I'm asked what is 'hot and what is not' for the coming year. Well I can honestly say that after spending time today conducting my own 2012 Wedding Trend Research I have come away with this!

The 'talk' from one set of wedding floral designer experts is that this year we will see floral designs taking on a softer appearance -- the pastels will be back and be 'popped' with feathers, gems and all sorts of bling.

Someone else will use a system that puts bouquets into categories:
The Playful Bouquet which they describe as a kaleidoscope of colors that are playful and bright -- hot pink, bright yellows, blues, etc. and will break with tradition to convey an atmosphere of fun!

Next they list the Romantic Bouquet -- no need to give this one further explanation .. a picture is worth a thousand words . . .

Moving forward . . . we go to 'The Green Earth Friendly' Bouquet . . now this category does not just mean bouquets in the green palette, but also that the material used is grown organically/sustainably and incorporate elements of the Earth.

And last but not least is the category of 'The Passionate' bouquet. It has withstood the test of time -- a classic red rose bouquet that has always been a symbol of love and passion

As I researched on I found a floral designer school of thought that relied completely upon texture as the defining trend for 2012!

Not that there is anything wrong with this ... but to be fair ... on the other side of the 2012 predictors you will find that today's modern bride wants more -- they love a neutral palette that they can use to bring their personality and style into play with their color choices and I think you will continue to see bold colors especially since Pantone chose 'Tangerine Tango' as their color choice for 2012.

One thing is for certain in 2012 you can see the hand-tied bouquet remains the most popular choice!

Now one more 2012 Pearl! When it comes to trends we are going to see more lace and that Victorian & Vintage look will be a trendsetter this year, up and to including the shoes. Why? Well in 2011 we had some high profile Weddings that range from Kate Middleton to Kate Moss. Both of them were gorgeous in their classic styles.

But I think the most important thing to remember is that this is YOUR Wedding and your decisions should be based on what pleases you for your special day. If it's flip flops and sand castles on the beach then go for it. But whatever you decide make sure it makes you smile!

2012 Color Trends

Are you planning a Wedding or Special Event in 2012? Do you follow Fashion Color Trends? Well if the answer to each of these questions is yes . . then you may want to pay attention to Pantone's color choice for 2012 . . . 'Tangerine Tango'!

I love the name 'Tangerine Tango' . . . if any of you go to 'Zumba' classes . . well you may just want to stand up and start moving to the spicy beat of this hot color.

Now most of us associate shades of orange with Fall Events ... but this year I'm telling you that you are going to see this mood elevating color making it's appearance sooner than later in floral designs. Why you ask? Well, because it pairs beautifully with pinks, reds, purple and will bring that 'champagne pop' to the common colors you are accustomed to seeing during the February Valentine Season!

Still not sold on 'Tangerine Tango' . . . well stayed tuned for more updates and photos because 'Tangerine Tango' is going to sizzle!

December Peonies

Trying to make 'dreams come true' are one of the best parts of creating Wedding Flowers!!! Earlier this month I had the request from one of my brides for Peonies in her Winter Bouquet. The photo she had seen was in a Spring/Summer issue of a Bridal Magazine but these were her favorite flowers and they just had to be a part of her special day!!!

I knew the moment that I received the shipment of Peonies from Kennicott Brothers that these Hot Pink 'Felix' Peonies were going to be PERFECT!!!

Someone once said that 'the eyes are the portals of the soul' -- as soon as I walked into the room to present this bouquet to my bride I saw the sparkle of glee in her eyes and once again simple flowers worked their 'magic' to write another happily ever after to this Love Story!

The Legend of the Christmas Rose

Legend has it that there was a poor little shepherdess named Madelon who came to see the baby Jesus. She watched as the Magi presented their royal gifts and began to cry because she had nothing of worth to give to Jesus. One of the Angels saw her tears falling into the snow. The Angel put her arm around Madelon and stooped down to gently brush the snow aside where Madelon's tears had fallen and to Madelon's amazement there were the most beautiful Pink tipped Christmas Roses! Madelon gathered them up and now had the PERFECT give for the Christ Child!

November Weddings

So far November has been 'weather friendly' for Weddings and Events . . the sun has been shining, sky is blue and clear, the air is crisp (as it should be) and everything is still aglow as we march into November!!!!

These great bouquets were designed for a Wedding last weekend - Full of texture and color -- the Mini-Calla lilies and Orange Spray Roses are like a Flaming Torch of color, the touch of velvet in the dark Red 'Hocus Pocus' Roses, soft plumes of Autumn grasses and those great hypericum berries bursting out in sun kissed yellow and burgundy just continue to provide a feast for the senses that only happens in this glorious season of Autumn!!! Happy Fall Ya All!!!

Top Hats & Lace

The Jim Thorpe Historical Society is such a dynamic group of individuals who are focused on preserving the history of their little mountainside village. This past weekend Jim Thorpe held it's Annual Fall Festival and the Historical Society's fundraiser Ball at the Mauch Chunk Museum and Ballroom. I was lucky enough to be asked to create the centerpieces for this Benefit. Their theme was 'Top Hats & Lace' so I decided to go with it and keep the floral designs in the 'spirit' of things!!!

Out came the ReCreation Top Hat Containers -- so environmentally friendly, gorgeous Red Freedom Roses, Fragrant Lacey White Gilly Flowers (Stock) and a band of Silver Sparkle to add the 'bling' for this night out on the town!

I can't wait to see the photos from this grand Ball because the locals dress up in vintage attire that looks like it is straight out of the Victorian Period.

If you have never been to Jim Thorpe . . you must put it on your list of places to see . . be ready to park the SUV, turn off the Blackberry, Smart Phone and get your walking shoes out because the horse drawn carriages have the right of way on the very narrow streets and alleyways. I can guarantee you that you will fall in love and come back often to visit just to slow down a bit!

A Perfect 'Blue Mountain' Wedding!

Last Saturday was a chapter out of 'Winnie the Pooh & The Blustery Day' because the winds were gusting at about 30 to 40 mph but that didn't stop Missy & Mike from having the Wedding of their Dreams. I had the pleasure of working with them and was thrilled when they selected Best Buds as their Floral Designer.

Fall is one of my favorite times of year and I love the majestic display of color provided by Mother Nature . . so much 'eye candy' to look at and take in and I didn't even mind hanging from the ladder and blowing in the wind as we zip tied down the 'Liquid Amber' branches on the arbor -- thank goodness for Yoga classes to provide me with balance!!

How Important Are Sample Designs

Last evening I met with a couple who is planning a large outdoor Wedding in October. . we have been working together for several months orchestrating each component of their big day. Missy and Mike are just a fun couple to be around.
Missy loves flowers . . and a big part of her plans include them . . from the ceremony site .. the aisle and arbor decorations to the centerpieces . . you can just see the joy in her eyes when she describes her vision.
A few weeks ago we were finalizing details and she asked about being able to view the centerpiece samples 'ahead of time' and I actually encourage samples to eliminate any sort of disappointment. Mother Nature can be a little tricky sometimes!!! Flowers do not always arrive in the same shades, sizes, etc. that you may have in mind or you saw in a photo . . so the best way is to see them is 'up close and personal' and that is what we did yesterday during our meeting.
Yes, there is a fee for the sample which includes the cost of the materials used and, of course, the required Sales Tax. I do not charge any labor fees because it is a sample and may need to be re-worked if it does not meet the expectations of my client. Happily I can report that has never happened during a Sample Consultation and last night was no different. Missy beamed, Mike was thrilled and they went home with their designs to share a preview of just some of the floral designs that will be showcased at their Wedding.
To me, no amount of money can take the place of the smiles I see -- they are payment enough. Being able to share the 'power of flowers' with my clients is why I do what I do!
So if you are planning any event . . don't hesitate to check with your Floral Designer about viewing a sample . . it definitely is worthwhile ...just ask Missy & Mike!

The Majesty of Autumn

Most people use calendars to keep track of time but as a Floral Designer, I like to use Flowers . . and you can always tell when Autumn is here because there is no other Season that can burst forth in the majestic colors of Fall!!!

This past weekend I was surrounded by this beauty while I created designs for Kayla and Matt's outdoor Wedding which took place at the picturesque 'Meadows' Event Facility in Hellertown, PA. This venue is surrounded by a stream, stone bridge and mature landscaping which I am sure provided Kelly, from Paula Galante Photography, a feast for her camera lens.

It's true the recent weather has been a wee bit dreary, heavily laden with cloud cover which kept us very moist from the constant 'pop up' showers, but on Saturday, the rain stopped, the warm sunshine burst through and added the 'special effects lighting' to showcase these colorful seasonal bouquets.

What I especially like about this design is the use of three different shades of Asiatic lilies which were an image of perfection blended with berries and preserved Fall leaves.

When you are planning your Fall Event . . don't be shy when it comes to color . . that is what this wonderful Season is all about!

Vineyard Weddings & Events

There is just something about an outdoor late September Wedding that is taking place in the Groom's Vineyard that he had manicured for his bride-to-be to make the perfect backdrop where they would stand facing each other reciting the vows each had written for their special day. It made my heart stir with excitement as I was setting up their event. The day was PERFECT . . . the clear blue sky, warm sunshine, a touch of the crisp cool air & the panoramic view as I gazed out onto row after row of vines that still held their gorgeous clusters of Chardonnay grapes that glistened in the sunlight!
This was Romance at it's finest and I was so happy to be a part of it!

'Keeping It Simple' With Boutonnieres!

Too Many Tomatoes?

As many of you already know I not only love to design flowers but I am also an avid gardener and cook!!! Well this time of year daily visits to the garden just yields a heavy harvest of tomatoes and like all 'country folks' we take a walk and share with our neighbors and family but the Tomatoes just keep on coming! So what to do with all of these beauties. I am going to share one of the recipes that I created for quick and easy Bruschetta. The first thing you need to get is a great loaf of crusty Italian Bread!!!! Give it a little squeeze to make sure it's FRESH and soft in the middle!!! You know what I mean!!! Slice it about 3/4 of an inch thick. Then I make up an Olive Oil 'concoction' that consists of Grated Parmesan Cheese, Mrs. Dash's Garlic & Herb seasoning and/or Tastefully Simple's Spinach & Herb seasoning. Generously brush your bread on both sides with this, place it on a foil wrapped baking tray and toast it in a 400 degree pre-heated oven until the bread begins to turn golden and crispy. While this is going on . . prepare your tomatoes . . I remove the skin from mine, coarse chop them -- drain off the excess liquid because this will cause your bread to become soggy, add some Olive Oil (about a tablespoon to one cup of tomatoes, give your fresh Basil a coarse chop and add that along with some crushed garlic and a little 'zip' of fresh ground black pepper! When your bread is ready . . remove it from the oven . . . top it with the Bruschetta mixture -- add some chopped fresh Spinach, Mozzarella Cheese -- fresh or shredded, and today I added some great imported Italian Pepperoni -- but you can stop at the cheese or use your own imagination for 'extra' toppers!!! Return your tray to the oven until the cheese melts and your 'Bruschetta Toasts' are sizzling . . then all you need to do is Enjoy!!! Hope you make this and let me know what you think!!!

It's Always Summer Somewhere

Labor Day Weekend!!! Hard to believe another Summer in our hemisphere has cruised by and is coming to and end. The air smells a wee bit differently & the sun is setting earlier. I treasure the time I get to walk in our woods with our 'Grand Girls'! We pick up fallen twigs that we use as 'Wizard Wands' and watch as the first few leaves dance to the ground like 'Faeries' performing a beautiful ballet.

Then stroll over to our Pumpkin Patch were the vines are heavy with these glorious orange globes of all shapes and sizes!!! They search under the large prickly leaves to find the 'biggest' one in Poppa's Prize Pumpkin Patch!!!

Yes, the last days of Summer are here but I smile and think 'It's Always Summer Somewhere!'

Unforgettable Bride

There are just some brides you never forget and Liza was one of them. She loved flowers and wanted each of her tables to have a different flower theme. My favorite was the design I created on top of this 'slice' of log she had burned their initials in.

But then there was her bouquet. I loved working with Liza because she was open to all sorts of ideas. I could not wait to present her with the gorgeous waterfall style bouquet that was a fountain of colors that popped with Peacock feather accents!

I would love to share all of the pictures that she sent to me but this Blog would turn into a short story novel. OK, maybe just one more . . .

Her cake was topped with California grown Eufloria Spray Roses and you guessed it . . more feathers. Thanks Liza for allowing me to let my creative juices flow!!!

Capturing a Couple's Vision

This past weekend I had the pleasure of creating designs for Laura and Christian's Wedding. They presented me with their color palette of buttery yellow and kelly green in order to match their attendant dresses which by the way were fashioned out of lovely sheer organza fabric and just screamed 'Summer'!!!
Laura wanted to use decorative Mason Canning Jars but asked me to 'dress them up' so they would be fit for their wedding!
I came up with this design which brought such smiles to their faces this past Friday and made me feel that indeed I had captured their vision. As I told Christian who was present when I was setting up their venue . . I wanted to give them a garden, so my idea was to use the 'Green Trick' Dianthus as a base over the jar to create the illusion of a lush carpet of grass from which the yellow 'Enjoy' Gerberas grown by Rosa Flora in Canada sprung forth surrounded by the 'dancing' Bupleurum and to add the magic of 'Faerie Dust' I spun Oasis Copper Deco wire in the jar and sprinkled a 'kiss' of Oasis Copper Angel Hair Wire on the Dianthus . . This is what I like to bring to my designs in order to make them so personal and unique. Their venue came alive in the glow of these centerpieces that matched perfectly with the napkins!!! Thanks Laura and Christian for allowing me to have the privilege to create something special for your Wedding Day!

2011 Fall Color Trends

OK like it or not . . . August is here and the Fall Season is knocking at our door!!! So for all you out there who are planning your Fall Events . . I thought I would share some color tips that I have discovered and studied over the past few months. No I am not a fashion designer but let's face it fashion and flowers go hand in hand and if you want to know how to create floral designs . . . well then you need to keep in touch with fashion!!!

After reading Michelle's Blog, I was happy to see that there is still a 'Vintage' trend and that Mocha has returned to a top favorite along with Orange & some shades of Green!!! Let's face it 'Mother Nature' and Kermit the Frog love Green!!!!

Zara's Flowers

There are 'star gazers', 'people watchers' and those of us who just want to see the 'flowers'!!!

I was interested to see what Zara Phillips was going to carry on her special day! It turned out to be a European hand-tied bouquet that was created by a London based designer, Paul Thomas, and featured flawless White Calla Lilies, 'Silvery' Dusty Miller foliage and a 'kiss' of blue from Sea Holly also affectionately referred to as 'thistles' ... which by the way is the National Emblem of Scotland and I thought it it was thoughtful to have them included in the design! Zara's bridal attendants carried a mini-version of her bouquet.

The entire look is a very traditional Bridal White with soft blue filtering through . . and I feel it complimented Zara's dress and the entire Wedding Theme beautifully.

OH and I almost forgot these beauties!!!

Finding the Right Bouquet

Just like the vegetables in a soup, flowers are all different and that is what makes them so interesting! Some of them are Bright & Bold, Soft & Delicate, Wild & Free and I could go on and on about describing them. I realize that trying to find the right flowers that will fit can sometimes be a daunting task for those who are planning a Wedding, Celebration or Special Event.
There are mountains of Specialty Books, Media, Websites, Blogs, Bridal Expos, etc. all devoted to the subject but how do you know what will work and what won't?
Yes, it's true that many flowers can be obtained 'any time' of the year but what you need to remember is that every flower has a season where they SHINE and are at their very best. When they are 'out of season' the quality may go down and the price will go up.
Also, Flowers behave differently after they are harvested and will be used in floral designs. Some are very hardy and can tolerate a European hand-tied design -- roses, calla lilies, freesias, alstromeria, etc. but then there are those like the great big mop head hydrangeas that will just turn into a limp hankie after a few hours when they are put into a hand-tied bouquet and have no water source.
Any flower can be designed into a bouquet and if done properly you will have picture perfect blooms all day that will be showcased for a lifetime in your photos, videos and memory bank!

Sea Daffodils

They call them 'Sea Daffodils' . . Pancratium maritimum!!! Now those of you who have had the joy of studying Latin as a language (I had 4 years of it -- don't ask) but the great part about having this pearl of knowledge is the fact that English word roots come from a lot of Latin words and the maritimum in the Sea Daffodils 'botanical name' gives it's habitat away . . they grow on sandy beaches but this gorgeous bulb is endangered because of the development of the beaches for the sake of tourism!
I had the good fortune to be gifted a basket full of these wonderful bulbs by my Garden Friend, Mary! I must phone her to let her know that mine have just bloomed . . I wish you could smell their fragrance is ethereal! So if you have the chance and you see these beauties . . pick some up to add to your garden . . the bulbs are not hardy in our Pennsylvania Winters so they must be dug and stored. I am told the bulbs multiply very quickly and I am looking forward to that!!! Must go back out to the porch to get another 'sniff' of these gorgeous blooms while they are still have their morning glow!

A Special Wedding!

Being in the Wedding & Special Events end of the Flower Business may give some the idea that you may not have 'regular repeat customers' and of course, you don't want to be doing Wedding Flowers every so many years because of failed relationships . . that would just be a sad state of affairs.
But, this past weekend I had the pleasure and honor of creating designs for Ashley and Aaron's Wedding that took place at the very beautiful & scenic Penn's Peak in Jim Thorpe, PA. Ashley is the younger sister of Christina whose Wedding I also had the privilege to design for a few years ago.

We met back in January for Ashley's Wedding Consultation and it was so much fun seeing Christina, Ashley, & their Mom, Mary again and to meet Domenica, Aaron's Mom. Working with this great group of ladies planning, creating and then finally seeing the smiles when I walked through the door with their designs was such a special moment and it just reaffirmed why I do what I do . . . it's not just about the beautiful flowers that I get to work with but to see the effects that flowers have on people, to meet such a wonderful group of ladies and to have the floral designs created just for Ashley be a part of their memories for a lifetime!

Congratulations Ashley & Aaron . . . and thank you for allowing Best Buds to be a part of your special day!

Photos of the bride and groom are the most common idea but Best Buds pulls out all the stops when we personalize each guest table with photos of those who are seated there -- won't they be surprised by your thoughtfulness in showcasing them as part of your special day!! Another great idea is to make a photo montage that captures special moments of the happy couple. The Holiday Weekend is a time for friends and family to gather and celebrate -- Picnics, Reunions, Weddings, Showers, etc. Here is an easy project you can make for your Summer Gatherings & Events that can bring the beach to you.

This glass jar was an inexpensive find at the local 'Christmas Tree Shop' but you can use any large 'pickle' jar . . my Grandmother had tons of them in her Summer Kitchen.

All you need for this project is your imagination and few items:
Sand, Sea Glass (or just some glass gems that you can purchase at your local craft stores, Shells collected from prior beach holidays, a votive holder and candle of your choice -- we used Citronella votive candles because these lanterns are used outdoors and they provide the ambiance and also keep away those pesky mosquitoes.

You are now set to assemble your lantern and enjoy them this weekend.

There are many other ways you can create this look for your home or upcoming events -- use your imagination and put your own spin on it.

Bridal Bouquet Styles - Which One is Right For YOU???

I love doing Bridal Consultations!!! First of all it gives me the opportunity to meet with people in love who are ready to embark on one of the most amazing journeys that life has to offer -- they have decided . . . this is it . . YOU are the one & we are going to do this together!!! Planning a Wedding should be fun and I always tell my clients . . . make lots of great memories!

I cannot begin to tell you how often I hear over and over again how confused they are about flowers, they 'just don't know what is right for them'!!! Well it's my job to help them find the right fit.

So how do you do it??? Well first of all I like to find out about them. I listen to their 'love' stories -- some of them very funny, some romantic but all of them interesting. It's their story and I learn alot about them just in those first few moments of meeting them for the first time.

Then I ask about the attire . . . the venue . . . their dreams . . . their budget because all of this factors into what will work and what will spell disaster.

We share pictures and I get a feel for what they have been looking at.

Then I share my 'flower philosophy' -- I tell them that I believe each component of their wedding/event should compliment each other . . . not overpower. Your Wedding attire has been designed to showcase the designer's masterpiece in fabric and my floral designs should not overpower it but rather add that little 'pop' to make the picture complete. I always tell them that I think like a 'picture' when I am creating flowers -- how does the camera see them and their flowers.

So what style is the right one and how can we make it 'yours'!!!

Most of you are familiar with the Simple yet beautiful Hand-Tied Bouquet -- Flowers designed and finished with a ribbon tie or clutch. Does it need to be just a 'round' mound of flowers compacted together where your flowers lose their identity . . I say absolutely NOT!!! Each flower should have it's own space, identity & texture they deserve to be noticed!!!! Hand-tied bouquets can be used for simple Garden Weddings or they can be 'jazzed' up with gems, bling, bullion wire, etc. to hold their head up high in the most elegant of surroundings!

Along the lines of the hand-tied would be your Nosegay style -- just a smaller hand-tied.

Then there are the bouquets that are designed in Bouquet Holders -- my personal favorite holder is the Crystal Gala Bouquet Holder that was created by J Schwanke of JTV and founder of uBloom. It is very elegant and comes in two sizes -- a large and small -- these bouqet holders are great for flowers that need lots of water and hydration to keep them looking fresh -- Hydrangeas, Gerbera Daisies, etc. One word of caution . . the large bouquet holder can become a little heavy and will give your upper arms a good work out especially if you are the type that 'wants it all' in your bouquet!!!

I also use these the Gala Bouquet holders to create 'Waterfall/Cascade' style bouquets. These are not your mother's cascade bouquet . . but rather gorgeous designs that give the illusion of your flowers gently 'spilling' from their 'holder'
It's a bouquet in motion and I love to introduce flowers like orchids or grasses that will provide movement for my clients as they walk down the aisle. One of my favorite tricks is to 'slide' the orchids over the grass tendrils. . . oh yes . . now that is poetry in motion!!!

Presentation style bouquets are just that -- a collection of flowers that you cradle in your arm -- Calla Lilies make up well for this style and I even did a rendition of my Mother's presentation bouquet with roses, lace and ribbon tendrils that had her signature 'Love Knots' tied throughout them.

Tussy Mussy bouquets -- these are Nosegay style bouquets designed in metal holders . . . they became popular in France way back in the Eighteenth Century -- a staple for the ladies of that time period.

There are many other unique and different styles -- The Crescent -- that is exactly what it looks like, The Biedermeier - a European influenced style that features blooms that are very tightly structured and arranged in a circular pattern, The Pomander - 'Kissing Ball style a round ball of flowers suspended from a loop of ribbon, wire, etc., The Scepter style -- very dramatic and recently I designed one using StarFighter Lilies . . gorgeous!!!

So how do you chose? Each of the above styles are beautiful in their own way and allowing your floral designer the opportunity to guide you to select the right one is the way to go. Trust me . . . I would never put Best Buds' name on a design I would not be proud of to carry myself or have one of my family or friend's carry. Best Buds does not sell flowers . . . Flowers are used to create bouquets and designs that will turn heads and bring smiles to all those around you!

Nothing can brighten a room like a vase of 'dancing' Poppies.

Enjoy this gorgeous flower as it sheds it's fuzzy pods - watch as it unfurls its petals into ruffled skirts.

When cutting poppies you may want to wear gloves because they do exude a substance that can irritate your hands. Use a sharp knife, and immediately sear the end of the stem with a match or dip them into a pot of boiling water.

Then it's time to let them arrange themselves in your favorite vase or container. Don't miss out on bringing some of these lovely blooms in to brighten up your day.

Country Living Magazine featured this photo some time ago and it made me think about what I am hearing from today's brides -- they are looking for simpler venues, environmentally friendly products, going from the round tables to long tables reminiscent of family gatherings that warm their hearts and create a sense of nostalgic romance for their special day.

The do-it-yourself favors and special items hand made by family members of the happy couple are treasures that they pass out to their guests with pride and joy as they share a part of their family's heritage.

The theme is all about a celebration and fun . . it has to be pretty but simple. Even the photographs are taking on a new look .. not the staged formal portraits but casual, playful and always romantic.

Simple menus but with quality foods along with the continued trend of the tall Wedding Cakes combined with the touch of shabby rustic chic. Imagination is everything in trends and using what you have on hand suddenly becomes a trend setter. Take for instance the cake stand I made from 4 square copper lanterns topped with a simple round of clear glass which allowed the candlelight to dance up through the glass and create this great reflection under the the cake.

Fondant is being replaced by yummy buttercreams and cakes are being decorated with natural elements like fruit, herbs and organically grown flowers rather than the traditional cake toppers and copious amounts of roses between each layer of cake

Today's brides want to share with their guests a piece of themselves by creating an event that will not only be enjoyable for one day but will be remembered and talked about long after the last dance is danced!

Things have been 'buzzin' at Best Buds this past month . . I have had the pleasure of meeting so many happy couples planning their Weddings and Special Events. I love talking to people about flowers and helping them select what is right for them and especially in today's economy . . . what will give them the most value for their Wedding Flower Budget.

Everyone loves a deal and that is why I offered the Booking Special which ends on 3/31 where you can save $100 on your flower order of $500 or more if you retain my services at the end of our consultation. This is in addition to the many 'other goodies' I offer to all my clients.

One of the other items I find very helpful for my clients is the Pre-Consultation Form that I developed this year which they complete and email or fax back to me prior to our meeting. It allows me to have a first hand view of their personal taste, style and vision as well as providing the necessary information regarding their ceremony location, venue site, etc. My clients love this service and actually tell me it helps to organize them as well. This form allows my clients and me to follow their outline as we cover each component of their Wedding and the time just flies when we are talking flowers!!!

This is the time of year when I have the opportunity to meet with couples who are planning their Weddings. It is an exciting time and there is so much to do. I decided to do a few posts about consultations that you may find interesting and helpful. I think one of the first questions I am asked is, "How soon do I make an appointment to come and talk to you?" I like to answer that one with a few questions of my own.
When you begin your planning there are some very important things to have done before you talk to your floral designer.
Here is my list of what items should be done before we meet:
       Your Wedding Date Selected
       Your Ceremony & Reception Site Reserved
       Your Dress and the colors you plan to use

These are the building blocks that a floral designer needs to begin to create your wedding flowers. When you have the above items confirmed and purchased, then it is time to come and talk to me. There is also a lot of benefits to retaining the vendors you want to use especially when you plan to get married in the popular months of May & June.

The next question I am asked is 'Do you offer Flower Packages?'
Weddings are such an important event and I believe that each one should be treated on a personal level so that the floral designs created will be a mirror image of the couple who plan to celebrate one of the most important events in their lives with family and friends. When you begin one of life's grandest journeys allow the flowers to tell 'your love story'.

Christina's Wedding

Today I received some gorgeous photos from one of my Best Buds' Brides . . . beautiful Christina was so sweet to send a collection of her photos to me. She had an true Autumn Wedding Theme . . . complete with sprigs of wheat in her bouquet. Talking with Christina today was so much fun because she visited Best Buds again for a Bridal Consultation with her sister, Ashley, who is getting married in July. It was like a reunion - Christina, Ashley who was Christina's Honor Attendant and now THE BRIDE . . and their Mom, Mary, who must have been one of my BEST friends in past life.
I truly have one of the best jobs in the world to meet with wonderful people like Christina and her family. And to meet new people, like Ashley's soon to be Mother-in-Law, Dominica . . . thanks ladies for a great afternoon of laughter!!!

It is the joy that each of us can share with those of us we meet everyday . . not just in December but all through the year. A simple smile, allowing someone to 'go before you', the wave of your hand in a friendly 'hello', the mending of broken bridges with family and friends are just some of the treasures you will discover if you open your heart to the Spirit of this Season.

Halloween is so much fun!!!! It brings out 'the kid' in all of us and who doesn't LOVE Chocolate!!!

Well this past week has been so hectic and busy with all the prep for Trick Or Treat Night, Weddings and having friends popping in 'just to see' what I had going on . . . . I love the colors of Autumn and my own Wedding took place in October -- what is even better is my sister-in-law got married on Halloween!!!!

I did this outdoor tablescape and wanted to incorporate all the bounty of the season, including California Grown 'Black Magic' roses from Florabundance, local grasses, berries, broom corn that I grow here at Best Buds and which every 'good' witch needs for Halloween and lots of other goodies stashed throughout this centerpiece.

Now for the Great Pumpkin!!! Charlie Brown would be so proud of my husband -- he grew this 87 pounder in his prize Pumpkin Patch and of course, I had to use it as a background for this gorgeous Bridal Bouquet!

Well I wish all of you a great Halloween -- May the 'Great Pumpkin' stop by your home along with all of your family and friends to celebrate this fun holiday!

October Glory - Wedding in Jim Thorpe, PA

I had the pleasure of traveling up to Jim Thorpe, PA yesterday to deliver the designs I created for Kim & Randy's Destination Wedding.
This little village carved out of a mountainside takes you back in time and I marveled at the sights and sounds as I waited in the line of cars and motorcycles that were 'crawling' along the road that overlooks a Gorge created by the swift moving waters of the Lehigh River.
After making my left turn past the Train Station that was bustling with visitors boarding the cars that would take them over majestic trestles to view the changing of the leaves I encountered a vision of yesteryear as horse drawn carriages and Iron Porches adorned with well kept window boxes bursting with an assortment of flowers and foliage greeted me -- was this a dream I asked myself??? No this was Jim Thorpe in all it's glory -- it's true a visit there will definitely 'slow' you down in the best kind of way.

Have you ever visited Jim Thorpe, PA??? If you have not, I am going to take you on a short visit to acquaint you with this unique village. I use the term village because it reminds me of a small town in the Austrian countryside where my grandparents were born. The buildings are old, the roads are narrow and some are even carved into the hillside making it accessible only on foot.

So why am I telling you about Jim Thorpe? Well, I had the pleasure of meeting two Wedding Professionals who are on a quest to make Jim Thorpe a location where you can have a local 'Destination Wedding' without flying to Austria!!! Amber Breiner is a professional photographer who took the vintage wedding photo above in Jim Thorpe and it features one of my bouquet designs. I met Amber last year when she phoned me to tell me about her photo shoot and I designed the bouquet for her model. Amber recently developed the website www.jimthorpeweddings.com which features local vendors, restaurants, caterers and yours truly. She is marketing the site to potential couples to consider using this local flavor of talent for their special day. She and her husband Josh, also a professional photographer, are very talented artists and they travel to your destination whether it is in the good old USA or overseas -- when you visit the above website click on Josh and Amber's Ad and treat yourself to a gallery of their unique photos.

Now, let me tell you about Tara!!! Tara Kubas is a Wedding & Event Coordinator who moved to Jim Thorpe from Long Island, NY. Tara and I met this past week for the first time face to face -- we chatted on the phone but on Friday I had the chance to sit and discuss with Tara her vision to also utilize Jim Thorpe's charm to attract couples. Tara is the featured Wedding Planner on Amber's Site. This is a gal who did events in the Hamptons and she views the beauty of this area as something that is unique & marketable as a Wedding destination both for local residents and from surrounding areas like New Jersey, New York, Philadelphia, & Connecticut!!! Can you believe we are almost through April!!!!! Yikes -- time does fly when you are having fun!!!

I have been richly blessed with another busy season of Bridal Consultations and Bookings for 2010. I love meeting people and helping them plan their 'Picture Perfect Day'.

Whenever I do a consultation, I like to get information ahead of time about colors, likes/dislikes, etc. so I can order in a selection of magnificent flowers for everyone to touch, smell and enjoy. It's like 'Show & Tell' - I don't know who has more fun!!!!

It brings a smile to my face and 'sunshine' in my heart when I bring out a cooler bucket of these blooms and my potential bride comments that she will take the 'bucket' just the way it is!!! I have always said, flowers do all the work -- I just help them out now and then -- tee hee!!!

Today, Jeff Leatham reinforced that statement -- He was a guest on Oprah Winfrey's Show featuring 'Dream Jobs' and he spoke about how he entered the world of Floral Designer -- He needed a job! He is a premier Floral Designer who didn't know he was a floral designer -- he had a friend who gave him a chance at the Four Seasons Hotel to try his hand at floral design - he took the flowers and let them do the work!!! Today he made Hydrangea Clouds for Oprah -- absolutely awesome and breathtaking!!!

Spring Has Sprung!!!

It's Finally HERE!!!! SPRING HAS SPRUNG!!!

OK, I will try to control my excitement -- but I really have a bad case of Spring Fever. Seriously, this past week of warm weather has caused me to see myself 'coming and going'!!

I have a list that is as wide as the Grand Canyon of everything I WANT to do!

Now that does not mean there are enough hours in the day to do them but I sure try to push the envelope!

Those of you who know me or have been a client of mine are sure to attest to the fact that I am an avid gardener.

Seed Catalogs to me are better than reading any Best Seller!!!

I think my Dad planted the 'seed' of gardening in me when I was a little girl following him like a 'puppy' in our backyard, begging to 'let me help' put the seeds in the ground!

He had a special way to plant everything -- for instance, bean seeds

Ahhh, ' The Lesson of the Bean!'

That is a whole other posting!!!

But if you have not noticed, the bulbs are popping everywhere, the trees are blooming and the perfume of Spring is everywhere!

With Spring -- comes Romance -- that's right -- Love is in the Air!!!

Just watch the birds, the bunnies and the bees!!!

They are all doing the Love Dance!!!

I was intrigued by a pair of Doves at my Bird Feeder -- what a show they were putting on!

Strutting their stuff all around the feeder and birdbath -- too funny!

The Nests are going up like wildfire in our woods (no economic slow down here!)-- the birds are picking apart my porch displays just to get a 'rare' Best Buds' trinket to feather their nests!

What is a Floral Garden Studio?

How is your Floral Garden Studio different from a Flower Shop? I have been asked this question over and over again so I decided to write a wee bit about the differences between a private non-retail studio like Best Buds and the retail Flower Shops you are accustomed to walking into and purchasing your flowers.

Ahhhh!!! The words -'walk into' -- right there is the first major difference -- all of my hours are by appointment because each of my clients are treated to my undivided attention without interruptions -- the phone is not answered, no blackberries are buzzing and there is no 'tweeting' going on!

Private Studios also are usually dedicated to specialty services -- Best Buds does not participate with wire services, or take orders for single designs, etc. as a Retail Flower Shop would do. My services are streamlined into a specialty category -- mine are Weddings, Special Celebrations - parties, showers, anniversaries, banquets, etc. and Home & Seasonal Decor.

So let's start with Weddings -- My studio is attached to my residence. There is no commercial sign because there is no walk in traffic.

When you schedule a Bridal Consultation with me I normally spend about two hours with a client discussing what their vision is for their very special day! I always want to know what the bride's dress looks like -- a photo/website where I can view it is wonderful!!! Also, the colors of her attendants and the attire of the Groom and 'his men'! Why do I want to know this -- it is like a puzzle and all the pieces need to fit!

Like 'David Tutera' I listen to what brides want for their floral designs, look at photos, and sometimes a client will have no idea what they want. Yes, I have books just as all the other shops do but you will never see me write up a price quote and copy from one of them. At Best Buds your flowers become a work of art created just for YOU because your day should not be a carbon copy of last weeks' bride -- you need to own it!

Another difference is the quality and freshness of products. Each event's flowers are ordered in just a few days prior to the date. All material is inspected by ME and must pass my tough standards -- and believe me I won't place my name on a bruised petal!!!

I do not do packages -- why? you ask -- well the answer is simple, your event is unique and I would not want to diminish the importance of your flowers and be forced to follow the guidelines of a package -- if I want to add an extra flower here and there -- I do!!! Yes, you get so many extras from Best Buds -- just ask my former brides -- they will be happy to tell you!!!

Now the down side!!! My designer resources are limited -- it is 'Me, Myself & I' who design and create your flowers. You will see my face the day of your Wedding -- because I want to see yours too and the smile that flashes across when you finally get to See & Touch YOUR flowers!!! I do have professional assistants that help me package, deliver and set up events - each one of them is an important part of Best Buds!

I do not do rentals - they can be easily gotten from so many other sources. My focus is flowers!!!

Spring Displays!!

The change of Seasons is one of my most favorite things about being located in the Lehigh Valley Area of Pennsylvania!

So right after Valentine's Day I begin to 'think Spring' and start my displays of whimsy and flowers to depict the current Season!!! Best Buds is a non-retail shop -- we are a Garden Floral Studio -- but that does not stop the designer in me from going full steam ahead with displays. I could not resist sharing this photo with all of you from a display that 'points' clients in the right direction when they come for their appointments -- this morning it was covered in soft fluffy snowflakes that seemed to tickle the rabbits' noses and make them smile. It was too good to pass up so the 'shutter bug' in me took a wee sampling of pictures and I hope you like this one!!!

We are coming to the end of February and March is knocking at the door -- this is a wonderful time to meet with your floral designer to discuss your Wedding Plans. The best advice I can offer to clients is to have your color scheme when you meet with your designer. Attire is important but color is what is happening when you step into the world of Flowers! The American Institute of Floral Designers is currently offering a Color Study Program on-line hosted by one of the uBloom experts, Leanne Kesler. It's a great refresher because Color Study is basic when you begin a Floral Design Program. You can never 'know enough' about trends and color. My goal is make sure 'I learn something new each day' and if I can share that with someone then it was worthwhile!!! So for today, let's enjoy the 'White' of the Snow and start planning for the Bright Spring Colors that will soon be popping up all around us!!!

Well Valentine's Day is over -- we are shoveled out here in PA and getting ready for another drop of snow from the heaven's above! I want to wish my sister, Monica, a great big Happy Birthday today as well!!! She missed being a Valentines' baby by a few minutes!!! Sorry Monica!!!! You still have the LOVE!!!!

This is the time of year for Bridal Shows and having done them in the past I remember the two day marathons of talking talking and more talking!!! I loved it!!!!! I got to meet all these great people and was able to chat about their 'dreams' for the perfect day!!! I came home hoarse but happy.

Best Buds did not sign up to participate as a vendor at the Bridal Shows this year - ahhhh :-(

I decided to take another approach to talk to all of you who have questions -- I started this Blog and put Best Buds Specialty Florists on Facebook (not to be confused with Best of Buds who is also on there) to be able to talk with you about your Wedding, Event, Home Decor, Flower, etc. questions -- all for free. Now I won't be able to give you price quotes and all that 'juicy' stuff without having you come in for a Bridal Consultation -- they too are FREE.

Why the questions? Well sometimes you are looking at flowers and you are not sure if they will hold up, look right -- what works what doesn't - what is affordable -- what is not -- what is in season and all that good stuff. That is where 'Ask Best Buds' comes in. Just another way to help you have what you want. You won't have to stand in line to talk to a floral designer, you won't have to call a local Flower Shop or sit through a consultation 'when you only have a question' - you can sign up to be a follower on this blog, or visit Best Buds on Facebook - become a Fan and get ready to ask your questions because now you have access to a Floral Designer who will be happy to give you an honest answer - no strings attached. Snow Storm Creations

Today we are having a Blizzard in PA and I am able to view Mother Nature's Beauty from my Garden Design Studio Window. The snow has been falling like soft feathers since last evening! I currently am working on a new portfolio for designs from 2009 and I came across this delicate Bridal Bouquet and I immediately thought of 'Snow Angels'!!! This very feminine design was created with Ivory Vendella Roses, Pale Bianca Candy Roses and White Mini-Calla Lilies which look very much like the tips of Angel Wings!!!! When I saw this photo I wanted to share it to give you some inspiration on this Snowy Day. If you are not having snow where you live -- then close your eyes and maybe you will feel the tickle of snowflakes on your face.
